IN THE COMMUNITY

Deputy City Attorney Harold P. Juren has been awarded the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia 1995 Public Service Award for Outstanding Deputy or Assistant Attorney.

Juren, a graduate of the University of Virginia School of Law, has been with the city's Department of Law for more than 20 years.

The LGA is a 20-year-old organization made up of town, city and county attorneys in Virginia. This is the second year the organization has given the award.

CAMPUS NOTES

Dr. Roderic A. Taylor, head of the Norfolk State University Fine Arts Department, received the 1995 NSU Roy A. Woods Outstanding Teacher of the Year Award at the university's annual Scholarship, Honors and Awards Convocation.

The award recognizes a member of the NSU faculty who best exemplifies the characteristics of teaching scholarship, research and community service at the university.

An internationally known sculptor and art educator, Taylor joined the Norfolk State faculty from Penn State University. He has been at the university for 21 years and since 1976 has served as head of the fine arts department.

In 1994, Taylor was named the Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association.

Dr. Eleanor Jones, professor of mathematics, and Dr. Wanda Mitchener-Colston, assistant dean of the school of arts and letters, received commendations for their contributions to the university. The two finished second in the selection for the outstanding faculty of the year award.

Four Norfolk students were among 26 winners in the 1995 Virginia Press Women's annual high school journalism contest.

Three of the award winners were from Granby High School: Angela K. Clark won first place in news reporting; Whitney Perry won second place in feature writing, and Rachel Gerloff took third place in sports writing.

A Maury High student, Kelly Erin Cramer, earned an honorable mention in news writing.

The following Norfolk students have been selected to attend the 1995 Governor's School: Anne Costa, William McKendree, Phan Son, Sarah Eppler, Cary Jones, Colleen Blue, Gladys Mangalian, Angela Riedel, Janet Blevins, Sharon Lee, Catherine Schweitzer and Valerie Williamson.

Stephen Zachary Cook will receive a master of music degree from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary on Friday. Cook is the son of Ivey and Mary Cook of Norfolk.

MILITARY PEOPLE

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Eddie A. Aurelio, son of Nelia A. and Cirilo R. Aurelio Jr. of the 200 block of Rogers Ave., recently received a safety professional award.

Aurelio was cited for superior performance of duty while assigned with Helicopter Mine Countermeasures Squadron 14, Norfolk Naval Air Station.

Navy Petty Officer 1st Class Patrick D. West, a 1984 graduate of Granby High School, recently was designated a master training specialist.
