Samuel C. Hunt, head custodian II at Easton Preschool, has been named the classified employee of the quarter for Norfolk schools.
Easton Principal Sharon Carson describes Hunt as never too busy or tired to help anyone. Hunt, a 21-year veteran of the school system, plans to retire this year. Carson said Hunt has a rare ability to work with children with varying disabilities who attend the school. Students go to Europe
Blair Middle foreign language students got a chance to practice their skills during a 10-day trip to Spain, Portugal and Morocco.
Most of the 20 students making the trip hope to earn high school credit for the language courses they are taking, said Sarah Bell, dean of students.
The students toured museums, cathedrals and historic monuments and also did some shopping. Spanish students helped translate.
``They knew enough of the conversational language that they could communicate in the shops,'' Bell said. ``They learned an awful lot. They really do soak it in.''
The trip marked the fourth year that Blair foreign language students have traveled to Europe. Students had to pay their own way. EAN gives scholarships
Three Norfolk high school students, including two who plan careers in education, have been awarded $500 scholarships by the Education Association of Norfolk. MetLife Resources helped sponsor one of the scholarships.
The scholarships went to Kelly Rogers of Granby, Kathleen Morris of Booker T. Washington and Aisha Durham of Lake Taylor.
Rogers plans to major in early childhood education at Virginia Tech. Morris plans to study secondary education at Virginia Wesleyan College. Durham, recipient of the EAN/MetLife scholarship, will study English with an emphasis in journalism at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
