BEACH WOMAN, 35, DIES OF INJURIES FROM 3-CAR WRECK

A 35-year-old woman injured in a three-car wreck Wednesday morning died Thursday in a hospital, police said.

Evelyn Ortiz, of the 900 block of Carriage Hill Road, died at 5:40 a.m. Thursday in the intensive-care unit at Virginia Beach General Hospital.

The accident occurred about 8:35 a.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Lynnhaven Parkway and South Lynnhaven Road.

Police said a 1992 Mercury driven by Everett G. Ryder, 70, of the 400 block of Wolf's Neck Trail, failed to stop for a traffic light while heading south on the parkway.

The Mercury hit a 1984 Dodge hatchback driven by Ortiz. The Dodge then struck a 1984 Oldsmobile driven by Sydney Beach, 62, of the 500 block of Declaration Road.

Ryder and Beach were treated at Virginia Beach General for minor injuries and released.

Police said that both were wearing seat belts and that an air bag inflated in the car driven by Ryder.

After reviewing the case, the commonwealth's attorney's office charged Ryder with reckless driving.
