TONIGHT
AFTER WOWING the world in ``Four Weddings and a Funeral,'' handsome Hugh Grant was ordained the hot comedy-romance leading man. So what does he choose as a follow-up? A little film with a big title, ``The Englishman Who Went Up a Hill But Came Down a Mountain.'' This quaint and folksy bit of work revolves around Welsh townsfolk who want Grant to designate their local hill a mountain. It also stars Tara Fitzgerald and Colm Meaney. Also opening this week are the comedy-tragedy ``The Perez Family,'' about Cuban immigrants and the submarine thriller ``Crimson Tide,'' with Denzel Washington and Gene Hackman.

WEEKEND
BANJOS, FIDDLES and smooth harmonies highlight this weekend's Bluegrass Kickoff at Holiday Trav-L-Park in Virginia Beach. Top entertainers include the Osborne Brothers (pictured here), Lewis Family, Lonesome River Band, New Dominion, Claire Lynch & The Front Porch String Band and more and more. What else? The good-time family atmosphere also features food, crafts and camping. While the music on-stage is grand, the campgrounds also fill with imromptu groups of pickers and fiddlers, so consider bringing your own instrument. Kick back in your lawn chair and soak in the sounds from 4 to midnight today, noon to midnight Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Gates open at 8 a.m. daily. Tickets: $20 to $50. 425-0249 or 539-5063.

TUESDAY
IF YOU DON'T FIND anything you want to see on the video release list this week, it's time to sell the VCR. ``Bullets Over Broadway,'' with Woody Allen back in top form, got seven Oscars nominations. But the sleeper is ``The Professional,'' the U.S. debut by Frenchman Luc Besson. It's a compelling, original action film with a difference - it has heart. Also out: the slacker hit ``Clerks''; Jennifer Jason Leigh in ``Mrs. Parker and the Vicious Circle''; ``Speechless,'' the romantic-comedy with Michael Keaton and Geena Davis, and ``Rudyard Kipling's the Jungle Book,'' Disney's live-action take on the timeless story.

SATURDAY
LO-FI HEROES Pavement's current album, ``Wowee Zowee,'' returns to the often noisier, more open-ended aesthetic of its earliest work - and of its live show, which can connect as powerfully as anything in its neighborhood. (Which isn't necessarily full of slackers, either.) The band, with former Richmonder Steve West in the pivotal drum seat, returns to Hampton Roads Saturday at the Boathouse. The show, with openers Come and the Dirty Three, begins at 9 p.m. Tickets: $9 advance; to order, call 671-8100. For more information, call 622-6395.
