WIND CHANGE IMPROVES FISHING FOR SPECKLED TROUT

Speckled-trout fishing improved along the northern beaches Friday when the clarity of inshore water increased as the wind shifted to a more northerly direction.

Good numbers of speckled trout were taken from Kitty Hawk Pier during the morning. In addition, sea mullet were landed sporadically throughout the day.

Some sea mullet, small spot and blues were decked on Avalon Pier. Anglers on Nags Head Pier caught tailor blues on white bucktail rigs along with a few trout. Some small mullet and spot also were landed.

Jennette's Pier reported lots of small croaker, spot and mullet taken during the morning. A few gray and speckled trout were landed in the afternoon as water conditions improved.

Fishermen on Outer Banks Pier caught some small spot, croaker and mullet throughout the day.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier reported a good run of 14- to 16-inch gray trout which lasted most of the morning.

Fishing on Avon Pier and Frisco Pier was slow, with a few bottom fish taken.

In the surf, speckled trout fishing was good south of Kitty Hawk Pier early Friday morning. Some scattered trout also were reported taken along the Nags Head beach.

Anglers fishing at Cape Point Thursday night caught several drum. A few were beached Friday morning along with some mullet and blues.

Surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton caught some small mullet and blues.

Blue water fishing southeast of Oregon Inlet was good Friday. Plenty of tuna were taken, along with scattered dolphin and wahoo. Two billfish releases were reported.

The Hatteras charter fleet caught some tuna, dolphin and wahoo. In addition, several marlin were released and a number hooked and lost.

Some of the best blue marlin fishing along the Atlantic Coast occurs off Hatteras Island in the late spring. Blue marlin action off Hatteras should improve rapidly and peak during the next several weeks.

The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 57 degrees Friday. by CNB
