500 TEAMS TO BEGIN PLAY IN 3-ON-3 HOOP TOURNEY

We've had March Madness and Final Four Frenzy. It's time this weekend to Hoop It Up.

The world's largest 3-on-3 basketball tournament begins a two-day run this morning at 9 at the Norfolk Naval Base. More than 500 teams, each guaranteed three games, have entered, including a team of Georgians who last year participated in the Hoop It Up world finals. Games will be contested simultaneously on 66 courts set up along the carrier piers at the Norfolk Naval Station.

The field for the 3-on-3 is closed, but there are numerous events still open to the public today and Sunday, the money from which goes to charity. Those events include:

Larry Johnson 9-foot Hardball Dunk - For $2, you can try to slam it with the flair Grandmama exhibits in those TV commercials. Sessions are today at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 1 p.m., with the player judged the winner receiving a free pair of Converse basketball shoes. Held at the Converse Court.

AT&T Long-Distance Shootout - For $2, you can test your skill from 20 feet out. All participants receive a complimentary poster. High scorers will compete Sunday for a grand prize courtesy of AT&T. Held at the AT&T court, with sessions running 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and Sunday.

Latrell Sprewell ``Spree for Three'' Challenge - $1 gives you one chance at a shot from 3-point range. Sessions run from 9 a.m. to noon today and Sunday at the Converse Court.

Tire Station Free-Throw Challenge - Everyone says they could score nonstop if no one were guarding them. Here's the chance to prove it. Prize winners receive a pair of Converse basketball shoes. The grand-prize winner receives merchandise from Tire Station. Sessions at the Tire Station Court run today from 10 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the finals to follow at 1:30 p.m. Cost: $1.

Score 1310 One-on-One Challenge - Each time you win, you stay to take on the next challenger. The top four players with the most consecutive games for the weekend square off for the one-on-one championship Sunday at 1:30. The champion receives a pair of Converse basketball shoes. Playoffs begin today from 10 a.m. to noon and again from 1-4 p.m., then again Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the finals to follow. Cost: $1 at the Score 1310 court.

Coca-Cola Shot in the Dark: As the name implies, you take all your shots blindfolded. The winner receives a custom-made regulation Sprite basketball goal. Competition will be today from 10 a.m. to noon and 1-4 p.m. at the Coca-Cola court. Sunday's competition, same site, runs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., with the finals to follow. Cost: $1.

Ten-Foot Slam Jam - Dunkers at the big basket are judged by local and national celebrities on style and crowd appeal. It starts at noon today on center court and it's free and open to everyone. by CNB
