With a 1-1 tie against Kempsville, the First Colonial boys soccer team captured its first Beach District title since 1988.
The Patriots won outright in the 1977 inaugural season and tied with Cox in 1988, losing to the Falcons in a playoff shootout that determined an Eastern Region berth.
``Winning the district and going to regionals was a goal of ours,'' said Ross Winfield, who scored with 23:15 left in the first half when he blasted a rebound past Kempsville keeper Jeremiah Smith from about 10 yards out. Smith had knocked away a rocket shot from Joey Broscious.
``We really wanted to go unbeaten in the first district season with 10 teams. But we'll put this behind us for the playoffs.''
In the Beach District tournament, top-ranked First Colonial (11-1-2 overall, 8-0-1 in the Beach) will face Tallwood Tuesday at Ocean Lakes. Cox will play Salem in the other semifinal Wednesday.
The championship is Friday.
Friday's tie kept No. 6 Kempsville out of the playoffs for the first time in five years.
But with their playoff hopes on the line, the Chiefs put up a gallant effort, tying the score 56 seconds after the Patriots goal.
Adam Schultz served up a nice floating pass on a corner kick, and Sam Meekins managed to head the ball at Corey Fogle's feet. The ball bounced up and hit the backside of the crossbar for the score.
Kempsville avoided the loss late in the first overtime, after Smith was penalized for playing the ball back to himself and then picking it up in the box.
Broscious started the indirect free kick play, serving the ball backwards to Joe Young who ripped a shot at the defensive line, which somehow managed to get the ball out.
``Their keeper really made some good saves,'' Winfield said of Smith, who finished with nine, including two in the second overtime. by CNB
