Luther Lester Johnson Sr., 74, of the 1200 block of 8th Ave., died Saturday, May 13, 1995.
He was born May 12, 1921 in Nags Head, N.C. and was the son of the late Louis Littleton and Callie Tillette Johnson. He was a retired painter from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and a past member of the Kill Devil Hills Board of Commissioners.
Survivors include his wife, Helen Elizabeth Hall Johnson; five daughters, Helen Thelma Best and her husband, Harold C. of Chesapeake, Brenda Twiford of Harbinger, N.C., Bernadine A. Smith and husband, Jim C. of Suffolk, Ida Jean Jordon and her husband, Larry of Hoboken, N.J., Harriet Wheatley and her husband, Billy of Collington, N.C.; three sons, Luther L. Jr., of Collington, Russell T. of Maggie Valley, N.C., Timothy D. of Kill Devil Hills; 17 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a father and mother-in-law, Charles B. and Ida Gore of Hendersonville, N.C.
A graveside service will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Laurel Memorial Gardens in Grandy, N.C. The family will receive friends at Twiford Funeral Home, Colonial Chapel, Chesapeake, from 7 to 9 p.m. today and at other times at the home of the daughter on Hanbury Road.
