FOOD LION, WORKERS SETTLE OVERTIME CLAIMS

Some of the 1,000 workers who filed claims against Food Lion for overtime worked from 1989 to 1993 have reached settlements with the grocery chain. Food Lion has agreed to reimburse 130 employees for overtime work independent of a 1993 agreement with the federal government. The courts have barred both sides from discussing the terms of the settlements. But documents filed in U.S. District Court in Raleigh show Food Lion has paid $270,000 to 98 employees in eastern North Carolina. In an August 1993 settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor, Food Lion agreed to pay $13.2 million in back wages to about 25,000 current and former employees. Food Lion agreed to the latest settlements on May 5. (Associated Press) by CNB
