Kim Aston, the girls basketball coach at Cape Henry Collegiate the past two seasons, will also run the basketball program at Western Branch next season, Bruins athletic director Chris Ake said.
Aston, 26, will take over at Western Branch for Jackie Tyndall, who is stepping down after four seasons.
``I'm pulling a Larry Bowman,'' said Aston, a former Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and Old Dominion University standout. Bowman coaches at Norfolk Collegiate in the fall and Salem during the winter.
``But I'm really excited. There's a ton of talent (at Western Branch). It just needs to be developed.''
The Bruins finished last season in a fifth-place tie in the Southeastern District and 9-13 overall.
Aston said she chose the Western Branch job over an assistant coach's position at East Carolina University, where she was offered the restricted earnings slot by new head coach Anne Donovan.
Aston added that she is committed to coaching Cape Henry through next season, at which point she will re-evaluate the idea of coaching two teams.
A Chesapeake native, Aston was a four-time All-TCIS selection at Nansemond-Suffolk Academy and the league's player of the year in 1988, when she averaged 23 points, seven rebounds and six assists.
The 5-foot-8 guard then played four seasons at Old Dominion, where she helped the Monarchs win two conference titles and make three NCAA tournament appearances. by CNB
