Two firefighters were slightly injured Tuesday night responding to a fire in a maintenance building at the Continental Grain Co. on Hampton Boulevard.
The fire started just before 8:30p.m. and was extinguished by about 9:15 p.m., a spokesman for the Norfolk Fire Department said.
The blaze was discovered by a security guard on the property, which is located at 8801 Hampton Blvd. near Norfolk Naval Base.
When firefighters arrived, they found the building engulfed in heavy smoke and flames, said Capt. John Carmody of the Norfolk Fire Department. Carmody said officials were concerned mostly about chemicals stored in the building.
But an initial investigation indicates that only ordinary combustibles - wooden cabinets and electrical cable - actually caught fire.
One firefighter injured his hand in the blaze. Another suffered breathing difficulties. Neither was hospitalized. An investigation into the fire's cause will continue this morning, fire officials said.
