Virginia Power has begun preparing its workers for layoffs scheduled to begin as early as this fall. Although figures on how many people will lose their jobs are still under consideration, officials said Monday that the layoffs will not be voluntary. The company told workers last week how it plans to cut staff. No voluntary early retirements or other incentives will be offered, said Larry Girvin, the company's vice president for human resources. The company will offer severance packages to those who lose their jobs, and last week's announcement was intended to inform workers what benefits would be available if they are laid off. A pooling process will be used to determine which workers will keep their jobs. by CNB
