N. ACADEMY WINS TCIS TRACK TITLE IN PHOTO FINISH MARGIN IS 1/2-POINT; PENINSULA CATHOLIC CLAIMS GIRLS HONORS.

Norfolk Academy won the 4x400 relay by 5.28 seconds Tuesday to edge Peninsula Catholic, 144 1/2-144, for the Tidewater Conference of Independent Schools boys track title.

Walsingham finished third with 71 points, Hampton Roads Academy fourth with 40 1/2, Greenbrier Christian fifth with 39 and Catholic sixth with 32. Cape Henry and Nansemond-Suffolk Academy tied for seventh with 12.

Biren Roy, who anchored the Bulldogs' 4x400 relay team, was named the meet's outstanding runner.

``I just ran what I could,'' said Roy, who also anchored the winning 4x800 relay team and won the mile, 2-mile and 800-meter runs. ``My other teammates put me in a good lead. I could've ran anything and we still could have won it.''

Without last year's top performer, Damien Taylor, who missed most of his events because of a pulled hamstring, the Bulldogs had to rely on Roy, coach Ken Lambert said.

``Roy earned his keep today,'' Lambert said of the sophomore. ``Our kids worked really hard. We had 40 extra points in the training room. This is the first TCIS meet that Damien hasn't won an event in since he was in the ninth grade.''

Peninsula Catholic's Brock Maust, who won the shot put with a throw of 46 feet and finished second in the discus at 121 feet, 5 inches, was named the tournament's outstanding field competitor.

Scott Mackie of Peninsula Catholic was named the outstanding all-around performer with wins in the 400-meter run, the triple jump and the 200-meter run.

In the girls meet, Peninsula Catholic, which came from behind to tie Hampton Roads Academy after 14 events, pulled ahead with points in the triple jump and 4x400 relay to defeat the Navigators, 107-99.

Norfolk Academy was third with 95 points, Catholic fourth with 65, Greenbrier and Walsingham tied for fifth with 49, N-SA seventh with 23 and Cape Henry eighth with eight.

Peninsula Catholic's Brigette Keenan, who won the mile and 2-mile runs, was named the meet's outstanding female runner.

Hampton Roads Academy's April Lucas and Emily Piggot were named outstanding field competitor and outstanding all-around performer, respectively. by CNB
