SOME HOUSEHOLD HINTS WILL GET YOU STEAMED

I KNEW YOU could cook in the dishwasher, but I'd never heard of using the appliance for a facial.

Just when the dishwasher finishes the rinse cycle, and before it starts drying, turn it off and open the door a few inches to let the first blast of really hot steam escape.

Then, quickly throw a beach towel over the opening, trapping the steam. With your hair covered in another towel, stick your head under for a few minutes or so.

This tip, from a 1980 volume of ``Hints from Heloise'' (Avon Books), is one of the, well, more imaginative.

Here are more hints from Heloise, as well as some from ``Mary Ellen's 1,000 New Helpful Hints'' by Mary Ellen Pinkham (Doubleday, 1983), and ``Household Hints and Handy Tips'' from Reader's Digest Books (1995):

Never buy frozen food covered with frost. It has probably been defrosted and refrozen.

If you're out of fingernail-drying solution, spray nails with vegetable oil spray. Wait five minutes, then lightly tissue off the excess.

Cottage cheese will stay fresher longer if it's refrigerated upside down.

Drop a rose petal into each compartment of an ice-cube tray. Add water and freeze for prettier ice cubes.

To clean an electric frying pan, cover the bottom with an ammonia-soaked cloth, place in a plastic bag and tie closed. Let set overnight. In the morning, the grease will come right off.

Refrigerate leftover pasta and saute it in butter the next day. Add a bit of garlic powder if desired.
