GEORGE GERSHWIN described summertime as the season when ``the livin' is easy.''
No matter where you go in Hampton Roads, music of every sort can accompany the leisure. From the oceanfront of Virginia Beach to downtown Franklin, diverse sounds add to the appeal of being outdoors.
Some area residents don't have to leave home to be serenaded. A full slate of free concerts is scheduled in Suffolk, Smithfield and Franklin. The events are free, but food and drinks are sold.
The eighth annual Summer Celebration at Constant's Wharf in Suffolk begins June 2, and runs every other Friday through Sept. 8.
Smithfield also has Friday concerts, beginning June 2. They are held weekly, through Aug. 25, on the lawn of The Smithfield Times.
Franklin began its We Be Jammin' Thursdays! concerts May 4. The next one takes place tonight. They continue every Thursday, every other week, through Sept. 7.
Most bands today are trying to please as many people as possible, so you will note that many of them offer quite a variety.
If you want to keep track of who's playing where - and when - find a magnet and keep this list handy.
