The action has been intense in the two Bay Rivers District championships, tennis and track and field, that have been contested to date.
At the district track meet Friday at Nansemond River, versatile Melvin Faulk helped Lakeland capture its first league tournament title, while Southampton's Rodney Darden continued his mastery of the high jump with a 6-4 vault. Both athletes will be in action again Friday, when the Region I meet gets underway at 9 a.m. at Christopher Newport University.
And in the district tennis final Monday, Lakeland's Angela Jones came up just short against teammate Mary Donnan Debranski in a three-set girls singles final. But the two will probably meet again in the Region I tournament, to be held Monday and Tuesday at the Howard Mast Tennis Complex. ILLUSTRATION: Staff photos by MICHAEL KESTNER
