During Virginia Beach's annual police memorial service Wednesday, law-enforcement officers honored colleagues killed in the line of duty.
Eight officers have died in service to the city. The first, St. Elmo C. Trower, was killed in 1923 in a motorcycle accident. The last, George W. Starr, was killed in 1991 when he stopped to help an accident victim and was hit by another car.
In the United States last year, 157 officers died in the line of duty, including three on the Peninsula.
Those names were added to a national memorial in Washington during a ceremony Monday.
