There's a new kid on the musical block: the Virginia Wind Symphony - brainchild of Maestro Dennis Zeisler, chairman of the Department of Music at Old Dominion University.
Professor Zeisler has assembled fine wind players, a preponderance of whom are music and band directors at Hampton Roads schools. Other members are from the military, academe, studio and the Virginia and Virginia Beach symphonies.
The unique aspect of this group is its members' sheer joy of playing and exposure to very challenging pieces - gratis. Nobody is paid. All are volunteers - which is incredible in view of their jobs, families and other obligations. The enthusiasm generated by their love of playing is conveyed to the audience in beauteous music.
Wind Symphony performances are coming up: one at 2 p.m., Sunday, May 21, at the Virginia Beach Center for the Arts; a second at 7:30 p.m., Monday, May 22, at Great Bridge Middle School in Chesapeake.
