Maxine Ruckman Merchant, 74, of the 10800 block of Oak Forest Drive, died Tuesday, May 16, 1995, at the Washington County Hospital. She was a resident of Reeder's Nursing Home in Boonsboro, Md.
Born February 2, 1921, in Romney, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Floyd and Florilla Bailey Ruckman.
She was a graduate of Martinsburg High School in West Virginia in 1940, a graduate of Mary Washington College of Fredericksburg, Va., in 1944, and she received her Master's Degree in Library Science from Western Maryland College in Westminster, Md.
She was a librarian at Boonsboro Middle School for 28 years, retiring in 1983. She volunteered at Hickory Elementary School Library since retirement. She was instrumental in organizing libraries at Pleasant Valley and Sharpsburg Elementary Schools.
She was a member of the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church in Boonsboro, Md., the Bible Class-Sunday School, the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Women, and was United Methodist Women's ``Woman of the Year 1994.'' She also took care of the church library. She was also a member of the Lynnhaven United Mehodist Church in Virginia Beach, Va., a member of the Lynnhaven United Methodist Women, and also set up a library for that church.
She was a member of the Washington County Teachers Association, the American Legion, Boonsboro Post No. 10 Auxiliary, the Boonsboro Homemakers, and the Boonsboro Senior Citizens.
She is survived by one daughter, Martha K. Gish of Hagerstown; two sons, Kenneth R. Merchant of Virginia Beach; and Eric Todd Merchant of Ontario, Calif.; one sister, Frances Shuler of Pell City, Ala.; and two grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Roger A. Merchant.
Services and burial will be at the convenience of the family. There will be no viewing.
The family requests omission of flowers, and memorial donations may be made to the Mt. Nebo United Methodist Church, 134 S. Main St., Boonsboro, Md. 21713. Arrangements were made by Minnich Funeral Home, Hagerstown, Md.
