An 11-year-old Zuni boy who told police that he'd mimicked actions he saw on a videotape has been charged with rape and sodomy involving a 6-year-old girl.
Isle of Wight Sheriff C.W. Phelps said Thursday that the boy was being held at a crisis center, after a detention hearing in Suffolk.
Sheriff's Investigator L.N. Price gave this account of the incident:
The children were playing on the girl's porch as her grandmother watched them late in the afternoon May 5.
When the woman missed the children, she went outside to call them, and several minutes passed before the girl answered. When she came out from behind a car next to the house, she appeared frightened and was adjusting her belt.
Questioned by her grandmother, the girl described what had happened.
Later, after sheriff's deputies had been called, the boy admitted, at his home and in front of his mother, what had occurred.
Price said the child told investigators he ``learned how to do these things from a VHS tape'' that is nonrated and ``available at video stores everywhere.''
The tape is likely to be introduced during a trial, Price said.
Police investigated for several days before filing charges against the boy. He was arrested Wednesday.
