Police said it was still unclear late Thursday whether a shooting which left a 17-year-old girl in serious condition was accidental or intentional.
The girl, whose name was not released, was in emergency surgery late Thursday at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was shot in the abdomen.
The shooting was reported at 8:40 p.m. in the 5400 block of Blue Knob Road in the Charlestown area.
Police said the girl was standing outside a car talking to a 15-year-old boy in the vehicle when a gun he was holding went off.
``The investigators are still trying to determine if it was an accident or intentional,'' said police spokesman Mike Carey. ``We're not ruling out either at this point.''
The victim was flown to Norfolk by the Nightingale helicopter ambulance. The 15-year-old was being questioned late Thursday. The weapon was recovered.
