The last time Great Bridge defeated Deep Creek, the Wildcats were tagged for three red and three yellow cards in a winner-take-all showdown for the Southeastern District regular season championship.
None of that temperament was in evidence in Thursday's rematch at Oscar Smith for the district tournament title. Both teams played smart, physical soccer, but No. 3 Great Bridge sealed the game with a goal in the final minute of play for a 2-0 win over the No. 9 Hornets.
The win was a bit anticlimactic for both teams, who knew going into the match that each had advanced to the Eastern Region tournament.
``We were playing for pride and the trophy tonight,'' said Great Bridge coach Ed Welliver.
The Wildcats (13-2-1, 8-0) went ahead with 10 minutes left to play in the first half on a goal by Scott Danner. Mike Bright threw the ball in from the left sideline, and Steve Weir headed the ball towards the goal.
Deep Creek keeper Nick Shockley made the first save, but Danner was waiting in front to kick the rebound into the net.
``I got my hands on it and dove for it, but it ricocheted out and he kicked it right out of my hands,'' said Shockley.
John Hatfield added a goal with less than a minute left in the game for the final margin.

Eastern District:
NORFOLK - The Maury boys soccer team parlayed a dominating performance into an Eastern District tournament championship and the right to advance to Monday's Eastern Region quarterfinals with a 3-0 victory over Norview.
No. 8 Maury (12-3-2) will face the Peninsula District champion at 7:30 p.m. Monday at Darling Stadium in Hampton.
The Commodores finished with an overwhelming 28-2 shooting advantage over Norview (3-9), and would have scored more goals had it not been for the efforts of Norview keeper Willie Richards.
Richards finished with 16 saves, many of them on point-blank shots.
With a gale-force wind at its back in the first half, Maury got on the board 13 minutes into the game when Charlie West sent a high crossing pass from the left side that Austin Flynn took nicely with his right foot while in midair. Richards never had a chance for a save.
He did, however, on Josh Bradley's first goal with 6:30 left in the first half. Bradley took a pass from Evans Poston directly in front of the goal and poked a weak shot at Richards, who let the ball slip through his hands.
Bradley finished the scoring with 6:20 left in the game, dashing toward the right post and blasting a shot to the left side.
