Nettie Simons Pierce, 99, died Friday, May 19, 1995, in Riverside Regional Medical Center, Newport News, after a brief illness.
She was the daughter of the late Samuel H. and Nettie O. Simons and the widow of I. Lyman Pierce Sr. She was predeceased by a son, I. Lyman Pierce Jr.
She was a lifelong member of Western Branch Baptist Church, Suffolk, where she was active in Sunday School and church work as long as she was physically able. She was a charter member of the King's Fork Home Demonstration Club and enjoyed sewing and all needlework.
She is survived by her daughter, Antoinette P. Powell and son-in-law, James Eugene Powell, with whom she made her home in Hampton since 1976; a daughter-in-law, Ruby F. Pierce; five grandchildren, their spouses; and 10 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in the R.W. Baker & Co. Funeral Home by the Rev. H.L. Wilson and the Rev. Joseph D. Lang. Burial will be in Cedar Hill Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Sunday from 3 to 4:30 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Western Branch Baptist Church, 6952 Old Myrtle Road, Suffolk, Va. 23434, or to a favorite charity in lieu of flowers.
