WILLIAM R. FLOYD JR.

William Ray Floyd Jr., 82, of North Shore Rd., died May 18, 1995, at his son's residence in Vienna, Va. He suffered from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (Lou Gehrig's Disease). Mr. Floyd was born in Norfolk on July 16, 1912, to Gertrude Lilly Gates Floyd and William Ray Floyd Sr., and had one younger brother, Robert Gatewood Floyd, now deceased. Ray was married 50 years to Nellie Lee Hayes Floyd of Suffolk, who died in 1992. After graduating from Maury High School in 1932, Ray served in the Army at Fort Monroe from 1933-1936, worked for VEPCO, and then joined C&P telephone company. He retired after 38 years with C&P in 1977. From 1973-1976, Ray was President of the Communications Workers of America Union-Local 2202, and remained active afterwards with the Telephone Pioneers. Ray was a member of First Baptist Church of Suffolk before joining Talbot Park Baptist Church in 1948. He served as a deacon, Sunday School Teacher, Institutional Representative to Boy Scout Troop 12 and Cub Scout Pack 191, Building and Grounds Committee member, was involved with the Sunshine Group, and was in the Fellowship Bible Class. Ray also assisted with Meals on Wheels. As a member of Troop 26 at Park Place United Methodist Church, Ray was the 82nd Boy Scout in Tidewater to earn Eagle Scout Rank. Ray is survived by his father's second wife, Laura Mae Floyd, of Durham, NC. He also is survived by three children, their spouses, and seven grandchildren: Susan and Robert Morrison and children Jeffrey, Jamie, and Jennifer; Jane and Donald Ewell and children Wes and Kelly; all of Virginia Beach; William Ray, III and Carolyn Floyd and children Devin and Lauren of Vienna, Va. Services will be held on Monday, May 22, 1995, at 2 p.m. at Talbot Park Baptist Church, followed by a graveside ceremony at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Ray's home on North Shore Rd. after the funeral. Visitation will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tidewater Drive Chapel on Sunday May 21 from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to Talbot Park Baptist Church, 6919 Granby Street, Norfolk, 23505, or the Muscular Dystrophy Association, 11 Koger Circle, Norfolk, 23502.
