IT'S SALEM GIRLS, GREEN RUN BOYS

The Salem girls were a little deeper and the Green Run boys a little faster than the competition Saturday at the Beach District track meet at Tallwood High.

Salem outlasted Bayside, 131-120, to win its sixth district boys meet in as many years.

The Sun Devils were led by senior captain Sherlane Armstrong, who won the triple and long jumps and took second in the 100 and 200-meter dashes.

Armstrong picked up 36 points by herself, and set a meet record in the triple jump with a leap of 39-8 1/2.

``I was thinking 40 (feet),'' Armstrong said. ``I was just trying to push myself a little farther.''

Armstrong set the pace, but Salem did most of its damage with second, third and fourth-place finishes, nickel-and-diming a Bayside squad that has more explosive talent.

``I explained to the girls that traditionally we've never really won the district outright with first places,'' Salem coach Shrecee Purham said. ``It's been dedication and finishing in the top six.''

Bayside's talented corps of sprinters and jumpers kept things close. Michelle Thompson won the high jump and 100 hurdles and ran legs on the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relay teams. LaShonda Cutchin won the 100 and 400 and anchored the 4x100 relay.

Other strong performances were turned by Kempsville's Adrienne Parker, who the 1,600 in an area-best 5:05.8 and then came back to win the 800; and First Colonial's Jamie Kollar, who won the shot put and discus.

In the boys meet, Green Run dominated the sprints and made a strong showing in the field events to pile up 140 points, 60 more than second-place Salem.

``We try to get as many people as we can in the sprints, so the points can carry over,'' junior Cedric Warren said.

Warren did his part by winning the 100 and 200 and anchoring the winning 4x100 relay team. Glenwood Ferebee was second in the 100 and 200 and sixth in the triple jump, after winning the long jump Friday.

The Stallions were expected to own the sprints. The bonus came in the field events. Green Run picked up 30 Friday by winning the shot put and the long and high jumps. The Stallions began the day Saturday by getting 10 more from Brian Mackey, who won the discus with a throw of 146-4.

``Field events were a major contributor,'' Green Run coach Elisha ``Cadillac'' Harris said. ``That was 40 points in just field events.''

First Colonial's Dan Baxley was the only athlete besides Warren to win two events, taking the 400 and 800. Salem's Gary Abra didn't win an event, but he placed in five of them - the 110 and 300 hurdles, and the long, high and triple jumps - to pick up 26 points for the Sun Devils. by CNB
