COX GIRLS HANG ON FOR BEACH DISTRICT SOCCER TITLE

Rain or shine, it didn't matter for Cox, South Hampton Roads' No. 2 girls soccer team, as it held on for a 1-0 win over Kempsville in Saturday's completion of the Beach District championship game.

Friday's match was suspended with 13:22 remaining in the first half with the Falcons ahead on Robin Dwyer's goal at 19:11.

Dwyer sent a high shot in the back of the net past Chiefs' keeper Kelly Sisley for what proved to be the game winner.

``The conditions were really bad last night (Friday),'' Dwyer said. ``But it needed to be finished. It was only fair.''

But Saturday's game didn't start out that way.

Five of Cox's starters - Dwyer, Kirsty Hale, Kim Iman, Meredith Benson and Katie McDonald - were late arriving because they were trying out for the National Futures field hockey team at the University of Richmond.

``The girls were confident,'' Falcons' coach Terri Sawyer said. ``I was confident starting without them. The girls that stepped up and filled their positions did what they had to do. But it sure took a lot of pressure off when they got here.''

Despite the late arrival of the Falcons' firepower and the core of its defense, the Chiefs were held at bay and failed to get off a shot before intermission. For the game, Cox outshot Kempsville, 18-7. Kempsville's Sisley made 13 saves.

The Chiefs (11-3-1) will meet Eastern District regular-season champion Maury in Monday's 7:30 p.m. region quarterfinal at Salem. Cox (14-2-2), which has a first-round bye, will face the Western Branch-Granby winner Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Salem. by CNB
