NORVIEW BOYS, MAURY GIRLS WIN

Eric Hines won the 400-meter dash, finished second in the 110 hurdles, and was a member of the first-place 1600 relay team as Norview won the Eastern District track title.

The ninth-grader's performance helped the Pilots outscore second-place Granby by 40 points.

``My main concern was coming in first and not letting the team down, because everybody was relying on me,'' Hines said.

Norview also won the 400-meter relay and the discus. The Pilots finished with 122 points, Granby 82, Maury 57, Lake Taylor 50, and Booker T. Washington 44.

Larry Austin chipped in with a second place finish in the 200-meter run and was on the 400-meter relay team for the Pilots.

Although victories were scarce for defending champion Booker T. Washington, Brian Hundley was able to provide a bright spot.

After setting a Eastern District record with teammate John Leigh, blazing to a 10.6 in the 100-meter semifinals, Hundley won the 100-meter dash in 10.9 seconds, with Leigh a close second, and captured the 200-meter dash in 22.1.

I feel that on any given day I can loss but as long as i train hard that only person that can beat me is him (Brian)'' Leigh said.

For the girls, Cassell Person won the 100 meter dash and ran on the 400 meter relay to lead Maury to their second consecutive Eastern District track title. The Commodores edged Granby by two points for the title, 101-99.

``We knew it was going to be a dogfight,'' Maury coach Walt Green said. ``But my girls were mentally prepared.''

Maury dominated the girls long-distance events. Jane Lawrence, Sara Frueh and Kit Weaver finished in the top three positions in the 1600-meter run after doing the same in the semifinals. The 800-meter run was won by Aisha Joyner.

Granby kept the girls meet close by winning the 1600 meter relay and finishing second in the 400 meter relay and the 200 meter run.

Lake Taylor finished a close third with 83.5. The Titans were led by Lutfiyyah Ali's victories in the 110 and 300 hurdles. by CNB
