ROBERT S. MARSHALL JR.

Robert Stribling Marshall Jr., 89, died May 21, 1995, in Portsmouth.

Mr. Marshall, a native of Portsmouth, was the widower of Betsy N. Marshall. He served as director of the Alexandria (Va.) Redevelopment and Housing Authority from 1939 to 1956; served as City Manager, pro tem, of Alexandria in 1949; and retired as Facility Superintendent of Alexandria Hospital in 1977. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church and was a graduate of the Virginia Military Institute.

Survivors include two daughters, Elizabeth M. Austin of Summerville, S.C., and Catherine M. Renner of Rockville, Md; three sisters, Mary Hobson of Richmond, Susan Timberlake of Staunton, and Myra Brush of Lexington, Va.; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth, by the Rev. Brian C. Hobden. Foster Funeral Home is handling arrangements. Memorial donations may be made to the Robert S. Marshall Sr. Scholarship Fund, c/o V.M.I. Foundation, P.O. Box 934, Lexington, Va. 24450-0934.
