Michael Dewey Hayman, 51, of Nags Head, died Saturday, May 20, 1995, at his residence. He was a lifelong resident of the Outer Banks.
Michael, probably more than anyone else, exemplified both the history and spirit of the Outer Banks. He was the son of the late Dewey and Phoebe Hayman, who owned the Arlington Hotel in Nags Head for 40 years, and the grandson of the late Captain Nathaniel Gould, a New England sea captain who first came to the Outer Banks to become an innkeeper at the turn of the century.
Michael attended McDonogh Military Academy in Baltimore, Md., and North Carolina State University in Raleigh, where he was a champion swimmer and member of Lambda Chi Fraternity. After college Michael served for two years in the United States Coast Guard. It was as a restauranteur and promoter of the Outer Banks that Michael became a standard bearer. He assumed operations of the Seafare Restaurant when it was little more than a raw bar for guests at the Arlington who wanted to dine casually. He transformed the Seafare into one of the finest restaurants in the country. Michael's devotion to his family and service to his fellow man was perhaps his most noteworthy badge. He employed in his restaurant over the years hundreds of people whose livelihood and families depended on the Arlington and the Seafare, as well as many future teachers, lawyers, and other professionals, including former Dare County Superintendent of Schools Pat Harrel and restaurateur Mike Kelly. He also served on the Dare County School Board and was a staunch supporter of education. In addition, he was the captain of ``My Lady Rachael,'' a pleasure and excursion boat.
Michael was a charter member of the N.C. Beach Buggy Association, a member of the American Culinary Federation, the National Restaurant Association, the ``Stiff Rod 'n Gun Club,'' St. Andrews-by-the-Sea Search Committee, and coach of the Little League ``Phillies.''
He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Burnett Hayman; three sons, Tod Michael Hayman, Shaun Russell Hayman and John-Michael Dewey Hayman, all of Nags Head.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 23, 1995, at 11 a.m. in St. Andrews by the Sea Episcopal Church, Nags Head, by the Rev. Charles E.B. Gill. Burial will follow in the Manteo Cemetery. The family will receive friends Monday, May 22, 1995 at Twiford's Colony Chapel, Manteo, from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to the Mike Hayman Memorial Fund, c/o Outer Banks Babe Ruth Baseball, P.O.
