Maury only needed to ring once before Kempsville answered the wake-up call in Monday's Eastern Region girls soccer quarterfinal at Salem High School.
After the Commodores' Amy Mayer scored 21 seconds into the game, the Chiefs scored three unanswered goals and then held on for a 3-2 victory.
``It woke us up,'' said Kempsville's Lauren Rafal, who scored two goals and assisted on the third. ``We knew we had to play hard from there on out.''
Rafal got the Chiefs' first goal at the 31:21 mark when she took a pass from Lora Phelps and beat keeper Colleen Maloney to the right corner of the box. Less than two minutes later, Rafal sent a cross from Phelps flying by Maloney, who had 12 saves.
Four minutes later, Anne Grochmal floated a left-footed shot into the back of the net for what proved to be the game-winner.
Maury (10-6) fired back in the second half and finally connected at the 20:20 mark when Shwante Snead blasted a shot into the left side of the net. Snead came close to tying it with 7:03 to go, but her shot bounced off the crossbar of the empty goal and out of play.
``We came out kind of tentative,'' Maury coach Robert Mayer said. ``We started to play better, but by then we were too far in the hole.''
Kempsville (13-5-1) will face Tabb in a semifinal at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem.
In other quarterfinal games:
Tabb 2, Great Bridge 1: Tabb's Jennifer Baker took a pass from Stephanie Rader, beat her defender and blasted the game-winner past Great Bridge keeper Anna Oliver with 30 seconds left as the Tigers slipped by the Wildcats.
``I saw she was by the defense and I had to go out,'' Oliver said through tears. ``I was thinking, `That's the game.''
Tabb improved to 13-0 and will face Kempsville at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem. The Wildcats finished at 9-9-0.
Tabb got on the board after a scoreless first half when Allison Shoemaker tapped in a throw-in from Jessie Stewart. Lynn Wheaton tied it for Great Bridge on a penalty kick after being fouled in the box.
``It kind of stinks, losing in the last minute,'' Wheaton said.
Western Branch 4, Granby 0: Western Branch's Mimi Knoop scored a goal and assisted on another as the Bruins cruised past the Comets.
Western Branch, which improved to 14-2-1 with its 15th shutout of the season, will face Cox at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Salem. Granby fell to 11-3-3.
``We all worked together as a team,'' Knoop said. ``We were more aggressive at the end.''
The Bruins got on the board with a quick goal by Sarah Bush at the 34:28 mark when she netted Ciara Lascono's deflected shot.
The Comets, making their first-ever region appearance, held Western Branch at bay the remainder of the half.
``Our coach told us we weren't playing to our potential,'' Lascono said.
But the Bruins came out kicking in the second half, scoring three goals.
Emily Thomas started the spree at the 27:22 mark with a high shot over Granby keeper Natalie Weatherburn, who had nine saves.
With 10:24 to go, Lascono connected on Knoop's missed corner attempt. Two minutes later, Knoop finished the scoring by converting a throw-in near the corner of the box. ILLUSTRATION: L. TODD SPENCER photo
