Virginia Waller Davis, 96, a granddaughter of Confederate General J.E.B. Stuart, died May 22, at Goodwin House, Alexandria, where she resided for the past few years.
Mrs. Davis was the widow of Andrew J. Davis, formerly a Norfolk investment banker and a manager with the Reconstruction Finance Corporation. Mrs. Davis was the daughter of General Stuart's daughter, Virginia Stuart Waller and Robert Page Waller. She was a graduate of Stuart Hall, which was named for her grandmother, who had once served as principal. She also attended The Peabody Conservatory of Music and later studied journalism at the Norfolk Division of the College of William and Mary. Her love for journalism resulted in a long and distinguished career in that field. She covered the General Assembly for the Virginian-Pilot of Norfolk, served as press secretary to Governor Colgate W. Darden Jr., and was selected by Governor William M. Tuck to head the publicity for Virginia's historical drama, The Common Glory. After leaving her positions with the state she continued to do freelance writing and, long after most persons retire from active business activity, she became a successful real estate broker with the Alexandria firm, Charles R. Hooff Inc.
A community minded citizen, Mrs. Davis gave much of her time to civic projects and human service concerns. She once served as president of the Junior League of Norfolk, was co-organizer of the Norfolk Community Concert Association, and was a significant supporter of numerous cultural and historical organizations. She was a devoted alumna of Stuart Hall, retiring from its Board of Trustees in 1985. The school recognized her many contributions by naming her Distinguished Alumna in 1981.
She is survived by two nieces, Mrs. Donald J. Dunham of Palm Harbor, Fla., and Theo Page Waller of Colorado Springs, Colo., and a nephew, Jonathan W. Old Jr. of Ocean Ridge, Fla.
A chapel service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 25, 1995, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk, by the Rev. Charles A. Joy. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family request that, in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Stuart Hall, P.O. Box 210, Staunton, Va. 24402.
