REV. SAMUEL W. TATEM

The Rev. Samuel W. Tatem, 75, died Sunday, May 21, 1995, at his residence.

He was a native of South Norfolk, Va., and had been a Peninsula resident for the past 30 years. He was the son of the late Caleb D. and Linner Tatem.

Rev. Tatem graduated from South Norfolk High School and received a bachelor of arts degree from Columbia University and Seminary and attended Southern Seminary in 1950-51. He was the devoted pastor of Calvary Baptist Church, Newport News, and was associated with the Peninsula Baptist Association for the past 30 years. He had held previous pastorates at Main Street Baptist Church in Williamsburg, Ky., First Baptist Church in Damascus, Va., and First Baptist Church in Gate City, Va. He was a World War II Navy veteran.

He is survived by his wife, Sarah Margaret Rogers Tatem. He is also survived by a sister, Thelma Shaddeau; two brothers, Ronald Lee Tatem and Caleb ``Buck'' Tatem, all of Chesapeake; and several nieces and nephews.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Calvary Baptist Church by Mr. Alvin L. Andrews and the Rev. Frank Hughes Jr., Pastor Emeritus of South Norfolk Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Peninsula Memorial Park. The body will be placed in the church sanctuary this evening. The family will receive friends at the church from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The family requests that contributions be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 4700 Huntington Ave., Newport News, Va. 23607. Peninsula Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
