Karen M. Daniels, who drives a school bus for Manteo High School, has been named the winner of the 1995 Tracy Lea Calhoun Memorial Award for safe and courteous driving, given by the North Carolina Petroleum Marketers Association.
Daniels, a two-time winner of the school bus rodeo competition, has been driving for Dare County Schools 11 years. Her daily route covers 88 miles, and she transports 36 students. The Manteo resident drives about 16,000 miles a year in her school bus.
She was honored for her safety record, her dedication to the children and the schools, her ability to handle any situation that arises on the bus, the amount of time she's been on the job, and the distance she travels.
The award, established in each of the state's 100 counties, honors a 17-year-old student who died in a school bus accident in May 1980. by CNB
