DEMETRIO R. ODANGO SR.

Demetrio Ruelo Odango Sr., of the 600 block of Creamer Road, died May 21, 1995, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Hampton.

Mr. Odango was a native of the Philippines, born Dec. 20, 1924. He was a member of St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk, and had served in World War II with the U.S. Armed Forces in the Far East and the Post-War Service with the U.S Army. He had also received the World War II Victory Medal and the Philippines Liberation Medal. He was a member of the Kahirup Association of Tidewater in Norfolk.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Nimpha Odango of Norfolk; six sons, Ed and his wife Melda of Norfolk, Gary and his wife Evelyn of San Leandro, Calif., Jimmy and his wife Jid of Norfolk, Emer and his wife Shirley of Norfolk, Demetrio Jr. (Bambet) and his wife Vangie of Norfolk, and Rick and his wife Wanda of Virginia Beach; six daughters, Elizabeth Rendon and her husband Willy of Manila, Philippines, Eleanor Odango Clemente of Norfolk, Nikki Ongtawco and her husband Chito of Virginia Beach, Lu Loyer and her husband Frank of Virginia Beach, Ester Brown and her husband Craig of Plano, Texas, and Evelyn Odango of Virginia Beach; 24 grandchildren and brother, Francisco of the Philippines.

For the past 11 years, Mr. Odango was a member of the grounds staff at Sewells Point Golf Course, Naval Station Norfolk, where he was responsible for the flower and ornamental plantings and for carpentry work. His many contributions will be sorely missed.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Pius X Catholic Church in Norfolk with Father Joe Metzger officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery on Granby St. in Norfolk. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel, today and Thursday from 7 to 9 p.m. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society on behalf of Mr. Odango's family.
