A man fleeing police on a stolen motorcycle was critically injured Tuesday afternoon when his cycle crashed into a tree at 90 mph, authorities said.
The accident happened at 2:40 p.m. at Great Bridge Boulevard and Joyner Road, near Crestwood Elementary School, police spokesman Tony Torres said.
The brief chase started just a few miles away near Mullen and Main's Creek roads, Torres said.
A police officer tried to stop the motorcyclist, who allegedly was driving recklessly, but the man sped away, Torres said.
Witnesses told police the motorcycle flew 20 feet into the air after striking the tree.
Police have not been able to identify the motorcyclist, who was listed in critical condition at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Tuesday evening, police said.
The motorcycle was stolen early Tuesday in Virginia Beach, Torres said.
