GROUND-BREAKING FRIDAY

The ground-breaking ceremony for the Fessenden Multi-Purpose Center will be held Friday at 11 a.m. in Buxton behind Dillon's Corner. The public is invited.

The Fessenden Center is named for Ronald A. Fessenden, ``The Father of Wireless Communications.''

Fessenden made the first wireless broadcast of musical notes from an antenna near Buxton in 1902.

The 12,619-square-foot center will provide a wide variety of recreational activities. The center will be staffed by employees of the parks and recreation department and older adult services.

The center will include two outdoor tennis courts, a basketball court, parking area and wooden walkway and pier. The cost is $1.2 million and completion is expected within 12 months. by CNB
