A police officer arrested a 19-year-old suspected of rape, robbery and carjacking Tuesday morning after spotting him with a stolen car and chasing him down in the parking lot of the Southern Shopping Center on Tidewater Drive.
Carl W. Griffin Jr. of the 2800 block of Dunkirk Ave. in Norfolk was arrested by Officer G.T. Davies about 10:40 a.m. outside of the K&W Cafeteria. Davies was slightly injured while subduing the suspect.
Police think that Griffin abducted a woman in the 1900 block of Park View Ave. about 2 a.m. Police said he forced the woman into her car and drove her to the 1500 block of Modoc Avenue, where he raped her. Griffin, police said, then forced the woman out of the car and drove away with her car and money.
Davies spotted Griffin in the shopping center parking lot with the car. Griffin, who was loading the car with purchases when Davies approached him, ran when Davies attempted to arrest him, police said.
Larry Hill, Norfolk police spokesman, said Griffin also is thought to have shot two men May 21 during an attempted robbery in the 1300 block of Eagle Ave.
Hill said Griffin also is a suspect in a series of home break-ins that are likely to result in additional charges.
In connection with Tuesday's rape and abduction, Hill said Griffin was charged with rape, robbery, carjacking, abduction, four gun violations, assaulting a police officer and escaping with force.
Griffin, who was being held with no bond Tuesday, will be arraigned this morning in General District Court.
