The top high school students in South Hampton Roads, on the Eastern Shore and in Northeastern North Carolina are honored today with the naming of the members of the 35th annual Scholastic Achievement Team sponsored by The Virginian-Pilot and The Ledger-Star.
Fifty-two schools are represented. Invitations were extended to all accredited high schools in Chesapeake, Franklin, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Smithfield, Suffolk, Virginia Beach, Windsor, Northeastern North Carolina and the Eastern Shore.
Each school was asked to chose a team of from three to 21 members, depending upon the size of the school, although some schools chose smaller groups. Collectively, the schools selected 565 students.
Each school nominated its top senior for consideration for one of three scholarships. The top scholarship, a $5,000 grant, was awarded to Lance Atlas Roy of Great Bridge High School in Chesapeake. He is featured on the cover of this section.
Runner-up grants of $1,500 each were awarded to Giulietta Jones of Granby High School in Norfolk and TaShauna Garner of Northampton County-West High School in Gaston, N.C.
The Scholastic Achievement program was established by The Ledger-Star in 1961 to honor students for their achievements in the classroom, on the playing fields and in the community.
