The Fraternal Order of Police Associates recently honored Investigators Ronald A. Jernigan and Francis D. Mazzio as Outstanding Norfolk Police Officers for the First Quarter of 1995. In addition, the organization gave a special citation to two Virginia Beach policemen for saving a man's life. They are Sgt. Mike P. Ronan and Officer Russell Christe.
Jernigan and Mazzio, who work as partners in the vice and narcotics division, are responsible for nine search warrants executed in the last year, including the recovery of more than 200 bags of heroin. They also recovered 20 ounces of cocaine, numerous weapons and $10,000 in cash.
Ronan and Christe were honored for saving the life of a man who plunged into the ocean in February. The two dived into 39-degree water and pulled the man to safety.
A portrait of Dr. Mason C. Andrews, professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School, was unveiled and presented to the school during a ceremony May 19. The cost of the portrait was underwritten by a group of medical colleagues, patients and associates to honor Andrews, a Norfolk city councilman and former mayor. The portrait will be hung in the atrium of the Jones Institute for Reproductive Medicine.
