SNEAD AND THOMPSON AT TOP OF POSTSEASON RANKINGS

Maury's Shwante Snead and Lake Taylor's Juritus Thompson took top honors in the Eastern District girls basketball postseason awards.

Snead, a junior and second-team All-Tidewater selection, was named the league's Player of the Year for the second straight season. She was the district's Newcomer of the Year as a freshman.

Snead led the Commodores to a second-place finish with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists per game. The guard scored double figures in 16 games and had 30-plus nights three times. Her hottest performance of the season came at the expense of Lake Taylor, which was undefeated prior to Snead's 32-point performance in the Commodores 53-35 upset over the Titans.

Thompson, a freshman who guided the Titans to their first championship and region appearance, was honored with the Newcomer of the Year award.

The point guard averaged 12.6 points a game and was the league's top 3-point shooter. Thompson scored double figures in 14 games and had 20 points or more on three occasions. Her biggest night of the season came on just her second varsity start when she scored 27 points in the Titans 60-39 victory over Indian River.

Rounding out the first team are Norview's Nadine Ward and Booker T. Washington's Cheria Askew, both repeat performers, and Granby's Kelly Rogers.

Named to the second team were Lake Taylor's Ray Ray Johnson, Tasha Thompson and Shnaka Walker; Granby's Nicole Jackson and Booker T. Washington's Alicia Fields, who earned honorable mention last season.

Lake Taylor's Felicia Miller, Granby's Tanya Jones, Booker T. Washington's Niki Lowery and Maury's Mary Malone earned honorable mention.

Lake Taylor coach Teresa Jones, a former Old Dominion basketball standout, was named Coach of the Year for the first time in her three-year career. ILLUSTRATION: Juritus Thompson
