The significance of Dr. Mason Andrews' portrait, permanently affixed May 19 to the halls of Eastern Virginia Medical School's Jones Institute is, to me and thousands of others, a most appropriate reminder of the contributions he has made to the science of medicine and to the improvement of the system for delivering medical care throughout Hampton Roads.
The number of lives saved and the lives bettered by virtue of his expertise and his dedication to humanity is simply not calculable.
The significance of the portrait does not fully express the feelings of some of us who, from front-row seats, have watched Dr. Andrews closely for three decades. We witnessed his persistence in the establishment of the medical school and his prominent role in helping it to stay the course.
To apply a borrowed expression, ``Every institution is the extended shadow of a man;'' Eastern Virginia Medical School is, without doubt, the extended shadow of Mason Cooke Andrews, MD.
