CHAMBER CLASSIC TOURNEY SET FOR SUFFOLK GOLF COURSE

THE HAMPTON ROADS Chamber of Commerce Division will hold its Planters/Chamber Golf Classic June 14 at the Suffolk Golf Course.

The Classic will use a Florida best-ball format with a shotgun start. Flights will be pre-determined by handicaps by club pro Mark Lambert.

Barton Ford Lincoln Mercury will give a new car for the first hole-in-one on the ninth hole. More than $1,000 in prizes will be awarded to the low three teams in each flight. And a cookout dinner will be served after play.

SUMMER LEAGUE: Action in the popular Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department's men's summer basketball league begins June 12. Players age 16 and older can register at Birdsong Recreation Center Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. through June 1. Cost is $25 for residents, $30 for non-residents, and includes a T-shirt.

The league draft takes place June 8 at Birdsong beginning at 6:30 p.m. For more information, call 925-6326.

HOOP DREAMS: The Lakeland High School basketball camp will run July 24-28 from 9 a.m. until noon each day. Campers will receive a T-shirt, shorts, a bag and a basketball. Cost is $60. Registration forms are available at all Suffolk schools. For more information, call John Fuller at 925-5530.

WRESTLING CAMP: The fifth annual Southern Virginia Summer Wrestling Camp will be held July 17-21 at the Nansemond Parkway Elementary School. The staff features Rob Waller, a former junior college national champion and a two-time finalist at the U.S. Olympic Trials; Former Granby High School star and NCAA coach of the year (Slippery Rock) Fred Powell; Brownsville High (Pa.) coach John Armel; and Nansemond River coach Doug Dohey.

Instruction will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout each day. Tuition is $60, with checks made payable to Nansemond River High School. Deadline is June 12. For more information, contact Dohey at 538-5420 or 539-6686.

GOLF NEWS: The Portsmouth City Amateur golf tournament, which had been scheduled for May 13-14, is now tentatively set for June 24-25 at Sleepy Hole.

The 36-hole event will be played at Sleepy Hole for the third straight year. J.P. Leigh, a Suffolk resident and a Portsmouth native, is the defending champion. Leigh won the 67th annual City Amateur with 151 last year. He edged Troy Ferris of Virginia Beach and Jeff Shield of the Eastern Shore by one shot.

SOCCER TRYOUTS: U-12 Lafayette has a girls' soccer team forming, to be coached by Sid Wesseldine. Tryouts are at Lake Taylor High School from 6 to 8 p.m. June 5 and 6.

VOLLEYBALL CAMP: The Fifth Annual Blue and Gold Volleyball Camp will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. July 10-14 at Western Branch Middle School. The camp is for beginning and intermediate players ages 10-14 and features USA/CAP certified instructors, volleyball videos, camper video sessions, team play, awards, and camp T-shirts.

Cost is $70, and a camp application and $35 deposit must be received by June 10.

BASKETBALL CAMP: Virginia Wesleyan head basketball coach Terry Butterfield will hold his fifth annual Blue Marlin Shooting camp; June 26-30, August 7-11, and August 14-18. Enrollment is open to all boys and girls ages 8-18. Sessions run from 9 to 4 p.m. Cost: $105 per session if pre-registered, $120 if registering on first day of camp. PAUL WEBB BASKETBALL: The Paul Webb Converse All-Star Basketball Camp will offer four one-week sessions this summer. Two sessions will be held in Chesapeake: one at Western Branch Middle School, June 26-30, and the other at Great Bridge High School, July 10-14.

Boys and girls ages 7-17 are invited to enroll. Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily. Lunch is included. Campers will be divided into groups for team and individual instruction and games.

Paul Webb, former Old Dominion basketball coach and the all-time winningest basketball coach in Virginia college and university history, is the camp director. His staff will include outstanding college and NBA players, selected high school coaches, and other special guests.

SOCCER CAMPS: Sonny Travis, men's soccer coach at Virginia Wesleyan College, will conduct three sessions of the Marlin Soccer Camps for boys and girls ages 8-18 this summer.

``Back of the Net'' costs $100 and runs from July 10-14. ``Advanced Day Camp'' costs $165 (including lunch) and runs from July 17-21. ``Mariners Week'' is July 24-28 and is open to ages 6-18 at a cost of $150.

TIDEWATER PRO SPORTS: TPSC will be offering the following camps this summer at Greenbrier Christian Academy in Chesapeake:

Baseball camp for ages 7-10 on June 19-23 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Baseball camp for ages 10-12 on June 19-23 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Girls softball camp for ages 8-12 on June 24-28 from 8 a.m. to noon.

Girls softball camp for ages 13 and over on June 24-28 from 1 to 5 p.m.

Additionally, there will be a combined softball and baseball camp July 10-14 from 8 a.m. to noon at a site to be determined.
