DR. ROBERT L. HOPKINS JR.

Dr. Robert Leslie Hopkins Jr., D.D.S., 70, of the 2400 block of Blueberry Road, died Tuesday, May 23, 1995, in a Norfolk hospital. He had practiced dentistry in Norfolk for over 42 years. Dr. Hopkins was born in Norfolk and was preceded in death by his father, Robert L. Hopkins Sr.

Upon graduating from Granby High School in 1943, Dr. Hopkins joined the U.S. Army Air Corps. He attended preflight school at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and graduated with top honors in his class. He served with the 8th Air Force in England as a navigator on a B-17 bomber during World War II. Following the war he attended Cornell University and the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, N.C., where he was inducted into the undergraduate honor society, The Order of the Golden Fleece, and served as an officer in Sigma Nu Fraternity. He was a 1952 graduate of the Medical College of Virginia, School of Dentistry, with a bachelor of science and doctor of dental surgery degrees.

Dr. Hopkins was a member of Larchmont United Methodist Church, Norfolk Yacht and Country Club, Cedar Point Club and Pinehurst Country Club in North Carolina. He also was a member of the Tidewater, Virginia State and American Dental Associations.

Survivors include his wife, Roberta Panella Hopkins; his mother, Tirzah Uzzell Hopkins of Norfolk; a daughter, Joann Hopkins Colon of Norfolk; two sons, James Lawrence Hopkins and Robert L. Hopkins III, both of Chesapeake; a stepdaughter, Susan Panella Jarelle of Richmond. He was preceded in death by his oldest child, Hariotte Allen Hopkins. Also surviving are a sister, Hariotte H. Roberts and a brother, Dr. Thomas U. Hopkins, both of Norfolk; and five grandchildren.

A graveside funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. on Friday, May 26, 1995, in Forest Lawn Cemetery by Dr. Lewis H. Morgan. Memorial contributions may be made to the donor's favorite charity. Cox Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
