FOUR TEENS CHARGED IN NEWPORT NEWS ROBBERIES

Four teenagers have been arrested and charged in a string of robberies that began in March in the Denbigh section of the city.

Police so far have charged the four with 10 armed robberies. Other charges are expected, said Patricia L. Mahaffy, spokesperson for the Newport News Police Department.

One of the teens is an adult, 18-year-old Gerald Daniels of the 300 block of Pear Ridge Circle. The other three are juveniles who live in Newport News. All were arrested Tuesday.

The robbers wore bandanas over their faces during the robberies. They used knives sometimes, and at least once they used a gun, Mahaffy said. Some of their thefts were purse snatchings. Others were holdups at businesses on Warwick Boulevard and Old Courthouse Way.

The businesses were Almost A Mall in the 15500 block of Warwick Blvd.; the TDY Inn in the 15900 block of Warwick Blvd.; Appearances, The Salon in the 13900 block of Warwick Blvd.; and the Energy Store on Old Courthouse Way.

Two of the suspects were captured Tuesday after a robbery at Almost A Mall.

After getting a description of the suspects over a patrol-car radio, a police officer spotted the two getting on a Pentran bus.

The officer stopped the bus and arrested the two suspects. The other two were arrested after interviews with the teenagers who were on the bus, Mahaffy said.
