Light winds, clear water and a high tide provided the necessary ingredients for good pier fishing along the northern Outer Banks beaches Wednesday morning.
Kitty Hawk Pier reported plenty of Spanish mackerel and scattered bluefish caught between 6 and 8 a.m. Later in the day, small bottom fish and grey trout were landed.
Anglers on Avalon Pier caught plenty of tailor blues, some Spanish mackerel and mixed small bottom fish most of the morning.
On Nags Head Pier, sea mullet, spot, croaker, blues and triggerfish were landed before noon.
Jennette's Pier reported good numbers of sea mullet taken.
A nice run of small grey and speckled trout developed early in the morning on Outer Banks Pier. Only a few bottom fish were taken later in the day.
Piers on Hatteras Island reported slow fishing Wednesday. Rodanthe Pier anglers caught a few grey trout and one 7.5-pound bluefish. A one-pound pompano was decked on Frisco Pier.
Surfcasters along the beach from Duck to Oregon Inlet caught a few blues and bottom fish Wednesday.
Scattered tailor blues were landed by surf fishermen from Rodanthe to Buxton.
Three cobia, weighing up to 40 pounds, were taken from the south side of Cape Point Tuesday night.
Small flounder, tailor blues, mullet and a few puppy drum were landed during the day at Cape Point.
Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was excellent Wednesday, with Spanish mackerel and bonito mackerel plentiful.
Headboat catches of croaker, pigfish and triggerfish were good.
Yellowfin tuna fishing off Oregon Inlet was fair to good, with the fish scattered from ``The Point'' to well north of the inlet. A few gaffer dolphin and wahoo also were taken.
Off Hatteras, dolphin fishing was good. A strong current and hot water resulted in slow tuna fishing. A white marlin was released by ``The Chaser'' and a sailfish was released by ``Hatteras Blue.''
If winds remain light and the water remains clear, early-morning runs of bluefish and Spanish mackerel should provide action for northern beach pier fishermen today.
The water temperature at the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Pier in Duck was 68 degrees Wednesday. by CNB
