For the sixth consecutive year Norfolk Southern Corp. has won the railroad industry's top safety award. The Association of American Railroads announced Thursday that the Norfolk-based railroad earned the gold medal in the E.H. Harriman Memorial Safety Awards for its 1994 performance. Norfolk Southern competes against six other large railroads for the award. The award is based on lowest casualty rates per 200,000 employee-hours worked, which takes into account volume of work as well as injuries, fatalities and occupational illnesses. by CNB
