Impressions left by reporter Alex Marshall's article following Norfolk City Councilamn Randy Wright's announcement that he was a candidate for clerk of the Circuit Court could be ignored, except that material from that article continues to be used by Wright's opponents to attack him.
In the article Marshall attempts to link Wright's candidacy to the kind of political machine once headed by Virginia U.S. Sen. Harry Byrd Sr.
In the interview with Mr. Marshall, which I had the opportunity to hear, Councilman Wright actually said that previous clerks of the court were more community active than the current clerk has chosen to be.
He cited Hugh Stovall and Billy Prieur as examples of community-minded clerks who constantly strove to stay in touch with and serve every segment of the community.
Making an important governmental function more accesible to the public and staying involved in the affairs of his community has been a hallmark of Councilman Wright's public service to this city.
If that makes him a ``political boss'' in a leap of logic by Mr. Marshall, then I say he's the ``Wright choice'' for clerk of the court.
