MARLIN FISHING-SUCCESS OFF HATTERAS UP SHARPLY

Marlin fishing off Hatteras improved dramatically Friday, with 12 white marlin, two blue marlin and a sailfish released by the fleet.

Action was centered on the back of the Rock Pile. Dolphin fishing was also excellent, with plenty of big fish taken.

Off Oregon Inlet, charters caught plenty of nice-sized dolphin and fair numbers of yellowfin tuna. The best of the fishing was well north of the Point.

Inshore trolling around Oregon Inlet was good with Spanish mackerel and bonito abundant. The Finatic out of Pirates Cove Marina landed six cobia on large bucktails. A good number of big blues were taken by anglers trolling about 12 miles northeast of Oregon Inlet.

Pier fishing along the northern beaches was fair to good. On Kitty Hawk Pier a few spot and small trout were taken. Anglers on Avalon Pier landed lots of small spot on bloodworms and a few keeper blues on jiggers.

Nags Head Pier reported scattered spot and mullet caught off-and-on during the day. Fresh shrimp was the preferred bait on Jennettes Pier, where some nice mullet were caught. On Outer Banks Pier some small blues and plenty of small spot were landed.

On Hatteras Island, Rodanthe Pier and Avon Pier reported only a few bottom fish taken. Anglers on Frisco Pier caught some blues and Spanish mackerel early in the morning and again late in the afternoon.

In the surf from Duck to Oregon Inlet, some small spots, small flounder and a few blues were landed. Along the beach south of the inlet, small croaker, spot and baby blues were plentiful. Two puppy drum were landed at Cape Point on Thursday night. During the day Friday tailor blues, mullet and some large pompano were beached.

Cobia and Spanish mackerel fishing should improve on northern beach piers today as onshore winds warm the waters.

The water temperature at the Duck Pier was 57.5 degrees Friday. by CNB
