Bayside's girls and Deep Creek's boys got off to fast starts in day one of the Eastern Region track meet at Todd Stadium Friday, but that's where the similarity ends.
While Bayside was just getting warmed up, Deep Creek - the state indoor champion - was coming apart piece by piece.
``I've never gone from all to nothing just like that,'' Deep Creek coach Richard Cox said.
The Hornets, hurt by injuries and discipline problems recently, got more bad news when do-everything senior Jason Waters had to scratch from the meet due to a leg injury.
Waters, who won the 110-meter hurdles and placed in three other events at last week's Southeastern District meet, will be out for the year, after injuring a quadricep in practice Wednesday.
The Hornets were already without sprinters Damone Perry and Dee Harrell. Perry pulled a hamstring and Cox suspended Harrell for disciplinary reasons.
What remains of Deep Creek's squad acquitted itself well Friday, however. Junior Deon Dyer won the shot put, and sophomore Jesse Grant was second in the long jump.
Dyer showed that the 57-6 he threw at the district meet was no fluke by going 57-5 3/4 Friday, nearly two feet farther than Lafayette's David Doyal.
``I know if I relax for a minute, he'll catch me,'' Dyer said. ``(Doyal's) first time up he threw 55. After he went, that's when I popped that 57.''
Dyer and Grant got the Hornets 18 points, good enough for third behind Menchville and Denbigh. Granby was fourth with 12 points, all coming from junior Anthony King, who was second in the high jump and fourth in the long jump.
In the girls' meet, at day's end it was Bayside 16, Shnaka Walker 16.
Walker, a Lake Taylor senior, was second in the high and long jumps, and also qualified for today's finals in the 200 and 400 meters.
Bayside picked up its points in the high jump, as Michelle Thompson took first and Monica Matthews third. ``I've done 5-7,'' said Thompson, who cleared 5-4. ``I've just got to concentrate more and get in the right state of mind.''
Oscar Smith's Cherida Carter and First Colonial's Jamie Kollar also picked up regional titles, Carter in the long jump and Kollar in the discus. by CNB
