SORE WALTRIP HAS HENSLEY HANDY SCHRADER WINS GRAND NATIONAL QUALIFYING RACE AS SPENCER FADES.

Darrell Waltrip's injured ribcage continued to ache Friday and and he has already made plans to have Jimmy Hensley standing by if Waltrip needs a relief driver in Sunday's Coca-Cola 600 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

``I'm better today, but I'm still real sore,'' Waltrip told team publicist Keith Waltz Friday.

Waltrip was banged up in a crash with Dale Earnhardt last Saturday night here in The Winston Select.

``My injury is called an inner-costal muscle tear,'' Waltrip told reporters Thursday. ``It has something to do with the ribs. When it hurts is when I have to turn the car.

``It'll be Sunday before I know if I can go the distance.

``We have a car capable of winning the race, even if I can only run to the first yellow flag and have to get out.''

Hensley, of Ridgeway, Va., has competed in two Winston Cup events this year for Active Motorsports.

SCHRADER WINS: Ken Schrader dominated the 40-lap qualifying race for today's Red Dog 300 Grand National race and beat Ted Musgrave to the finish line by .20 seconds.

Ten starting positions for today's race were determined by the top 10 finishers in the race.

Behind Musgrave were Terry Labonte, Kevin Lepage, Dirk Stevens, Greg Sacks, Jeremy Mayfield, Johnny Rumley, David Bonnett and Ward Burton.

Jimmy Spencer, who started on the outside pole, faded to 12th and did not qualify for today's event. There were no crashes in the qualifying race.

Steve Grissom finished 21st, but took the provisional starting spot available to former champions and will be the 43rd starter.

BLACKOUT CANCELED: A local television blackout for the 600 has been canceled, speedway officials announced Friday. There were only 300 reserved grandstand seats still for sale at the time of the announcement.

BUD MOORE HONORED: Longtime NASCAR car owner and Ford loyalist Bud Moore was awarded Ford Motor Company's Special Achievement Award - a Steuben glass eagle - by Edsel Ford II during a ceremonial luncheon Friday at the Speedway Club.

Moore is only the eighth recipient of the award.

WILLIAMS INJURED: Dale Williams, who was taken to Cabarrus Memorial Hospital here after crashing during his Grand National qualifying run, suffered broken ribs in the accident and was released after treatment Thursday, track officials said.

MINTER WINS POLE: Shari Minter, who led much of the first half of the sportsman race Wednesday night before getting knocked out of the race in a crash, won the pole for today's race, which precedes the Grand National race.

Minter took the top starting spot with a speed of 156.767 mph. Norfolk driver Joe Gaita failed to make the sportsman show. He was 42nd fastest for a 40-car field. ILLUSTRATION: ASSOCIATED PRESS photo
